Stress Test & Stress Echocardiography
Monitoring you and your heart.
By monitoring you and your heart before, during and after physical exertion, we’re able to better detect blockages of the coronary arteries. This is because areas of the heart which are not receiving adequate blood flow may not contract normally after exercise. The echocardiography allows us to see this.
What to expect:
The stress test begins with the acquisition of a 12-lead ECG and a baseline echo scan. You are then asked to walk on a treadmill according to a specific protocol. Depending on your fitness the test can last from anywhere between 1 and 21 minutes. The test gets harder with incremental increased workload every 3 minutes. Once the treadmill stops the echo pictures are repeated to compare with the original pictures. This helps the doctor determine if you passed the test or failed it – which would require more testing in most instances.
What to bring:
- Valid referral from your GP or Specialist
- List of medications
- Any recent test results
- Patient Information Form
For your visit it is essential that you have a valid referral from your GP or other specialist.
We’ll also ask you to complete a Patient Information Form. You may complete the form online, download a copy to complete and bring with you, or fill out a form in person upon arrival.
Please note: You’ll be required to complete a consent form in person before your Stress Test can begin. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment so we can facilitate this for you. * A negative stress echocardiogram does not exclude coronary atherosclerosis.
What to wear:
Please wear or bring clothing and shoes suitable for walking or running.
We will need access to your chest for parts of this test. Your modesty will be protected by a disposable gown.
